Positive Handling in Schools Certification

Teachers and support staff in today’s schools regularly face aggressive behaviour from students. These situations can be difficult to manage, particularly when a student is highly aggressive or threatens serious harm to themselves, others or the school. To help manage these risks, schools are required to give teachers and support staff training in positive handling, so they properly understand when and how force may be used.

This course provides a comprehensive overview of positive handling, starting with the relevant legislation before moving on to government guidance and advice. It also covers the aggression curve, giving staff valuable insight into the best time to intervene, and provides the tools needed to make sound decisions about when physical intervention is appropriate.

You will learn

• What positive handling is, including a brief history of its use in UK schools
• The relevant legislation regulating positive handling and physical intervention in schools
• Government guidelines and advice on positive handling
• The Kaplan-Wheeler diagram and how it illustrates each phase of the aggression curve
• The SCARF model and how to use it to de-escalate tense or aggressive situations
• How to make decisions about when to intervene

The course is made up of 5 modules (around 3 hours of learning), each including a quiz.
