Entry requirements

Age

You must be at least 18 years old to apply for an SIA licence.

Identification

You must bring original photographic identification on the first day. We cannot register you with the awarding body without it. Documents we can usually accept include a valid passport, a UK photocard driving licence, a biometric residence permit or a national identity card from an EEA country. If you are not sure what you have is acceptable, call us before you book and we will check it with you.

English language

The examinations are written and taken in English, and the role involves dealing with the public, writing incident notes and giving evidence. You will need English at around B1 / Level 1 standard to follow the course and pass the assessments. We will talk this through with you before you book if you are unsure.

Emergency First Aid at Work

Since April 2021 the SIA has required anyone applying for a new door supervisor licence to hold a valid first aid qualification before they complete their door supervisor training. A current Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), First Aid at Work (FAW) or equivalent certificate is acceptable.

If you do not already hold one, you can add our Emergency First Aid at Work course for £95 when you book.

What you will learn

The qualification is made up of four units.

Unit 1 – Working in the private security industry

  • The purpose and role of the Security Industry Authority and how licensing works
  • The law as it applies to private security, including your powers and their limits
  • Health and safety, fire safety and emergency procedures
  • Communication skills, record keeping and working as part of a team

Unit 2 – Working as a door supervisor

  • Licensing law, licensable activities and the responsibilities of a licensed premises
  • Searching people and property, and dealing with prohibited items
  • Drug awareness, recognising vulnerability and safeguarding customers
  • Queue management, ejections, crowd safety and counter terrorism awareness
  • Preserving a scene and working alongside the police and emergency services

Unit 3 – Conflict management

  • Recognising the signs that a situation is escalating
  • De-escalation, negotiation and problem solving under pressure
  • Communicating assertively without inflaming a situation
  • Post incident procedures, reporting and personal wellbeing

Unit 4 – Physical intervention skills

  • Reasonable, proportionate and lawful use of force
  • Low level restrictive skills and disengagement techniques
  • Escorting and holding techniques, and recognising the risks of restraint
  • Practical assessment, supervised throughout by your tutor

Unit 4 is physical. Wear comfortable clothing and flat, closed footwear on those days, and tell your tutor in advance about any injury or medical condition that may affect your ability to take part.

How you are assessed

Units 1, 2 and 3 are assessed by multiple choice examinations, which you sit at our centre at the end of the relevant sessions. Unit 4 is assessed by practical demonstration. Your tutor prepares you for every assessment during the course, and mock questions are worked through in class.

If you do not pass an examination first time, you can re-sit it. A re-sit fee applies, and we will explain the cost and the next available date at the time.

Applying for your SIA door supervisor licence

Once Highfield has issued your certificate, you can apply to the Security Industry Authority for a front line door supervisor licence. The application involves confirming your identity, giving a five year address history and consenting to a criminal record check.

Skills Pad can handle this for you for £250, which includes our administration fee. You can also apply directly to the SIA yourself if you prefer. See our SIA licence badge application page for more detail.

Please note: completing this course does not guarantee that you will be granted a licence. The SIA decides every application on its own merits, and a criminal record does not automatically disqualify you. If you have concerns about your history, speak to us before you book and we will give you honest guidance.

Where you will train

Skills Pad, 33 Park Street West, Luton, LU1 3BE

  • By train: around a ten minute walk from Luton railway station.
  • By bus: Luton Interchange and the town centre stops are a short walk away.
  • By car: Luton town centre car parks are within walking distance. There is no on-site parking.

Learners travel to us from Luton, Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Bedford, Milton Keynes, Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, St Albans, Watford and north London.

Where a door supervisor licence can take you

A front line door supervisor licence is the most widely used SIA licence in the UK, because it covers door supervision and also allows you to carry out security guarding work. Licence holders work in nightclubs, bars, pubs, hotels, restaurants, stadiums, arenas, music festivals, conferences, retail sites, student venues and private functions, on employed, agency and self employed terms.

Pay rates vary considerably by region, venue, employer and shift pattern, so we do not quote a figure here. Your tutor can give you a realistic picture of what employers in Bedfordshire and north London are currently paying.

Progression after this course

  • Keep your licence current. Before you renew, you will need the SIA Door Supervisor Refresher.
  • Add a second licence. The SIA CCTV Operators Course qualifies you for public space surveillance work and opens up control room roles.
  • Move into supervision. With experience, door supervisors progress into head door, supervisor, event control and security management roles.

Six training days at our Luton centre, spread across the date ranges listed above. Weekend days within those ranges are not training days.

Do I need first aid before I can do the door supervisor course?

Yes. You must hold a valid Emergency First Aid at Work certificate or equivalent. If you do not have one, add our one day EFAW course for £95 when you book.

Do I need any experience or qualifications to start?

No previous security experience or qualifications are required. You need to be 18 or over, bring acceptable photographic ID and have English at around B1 / Level 1 standard.

How much does the whole thing cost, start to finish?

£350 for the course, plus £95 if you need Emergency First Aid at Work, plus £250 for your SIA licence through us. That is £695 in total if you need everything, or £600 if you are already first aid trained.

Can I pay in instalments?

Talk to us. Call 01582 958844 or message us on WhatsApp and we will explain the payment options currently available.

When will I get my certificate?

Certificates are issued by Highfield once all four units have been passed and your results have been processed. We will keep you updated and tell you as soon as yours is available.

What happens if I fail one of the exams?

You can re-sit it. A re-sit fee applies and we will book you onto the next available assessment date.

No. You need a valid SIA licence before you can work in a licensed role, and that is issued by the SIA after your application and checks are complete, not by us.
