Learning disabilities are often diagnosed in children after they start school, although the underlying disorders develop at a much younger age, even before birth, and only become apparent once children reach school age. Affected children may struggle to interpret what they see or hear, or to connect information from different parts of the brain. These difficulties can show up as problems with written or spoken language, self-control, co-ordination or attention.

Learning disabilities can also affect schoolwork, making it harder to read, write or do mathematics — though an individual’s IQ or intelligence is not reflected by having a learning disability. This is why learning disabilities training is essential for all staff working in education.

These disorders are often lifelong, affecting an individual’s family life, work or school, friendships, daily routines and even play. Some children experience overlapping learning disabilities, while others have just one independent learning issue with no effect on other parts of their life. Not all learning difficulties are learning disabilities — some children are simply slower to develop specific skills, which may look like a delay in reaching maturity rather than a true disorder.

Our learning disabilities training covers:

  • What learning disabilities are and how they occur
  • Types of learning disabilities
  • Signs of learning disabilities in children in their early years, their fifth year and at primary school level
  • Signs of learning disabilities in secondary school students and adults
  • Interventions for learning disabilities
  • Learning disability awareness months and weeks

This 1 module course takes around 0.75 hours to complete and forms part of our Care courses and our CPD courses collection. For more support courses, visit our training programmes page.
