There are four main purposes of this course.

Firstly, to raise awareness of common mental health issues arising within the construction industry and how these are affected by the specific demands of working in this sector.

Secondly, the course is designed to help you learn to recognise signs and predisposing factors in common mental health problems, in both yourself and those with whom you work. We look specifically at depression, anxiety and stress, explaining clearly what these are, how they manifest and what you can do about them, as well as pointing you towards further resources should you need information about other mental health conditions.

Thirdly, the course seeks to provide insight into the importance of establishing a cultural shift within the construction industry, away from the stigmatisation of mental health issues and towards a culture of openness, compassion and information. We offer down-to-earth guidance on the transformative benefits of speaking out and creating a working environment where it feels safe for people to do so.

Finally, this course is designed to equip you with your own personal mental health wellbeing toolbox, full of practical, realistic and scientifically proven strategies to help you support your own mental wellbeing, as well as that of those around you.

You will learn:

  • Common issues affecting the mental health and wellbeing of workers within the construction industry
  • Signs to look out for if you’re concerned about your own mental health or that of your colleagues or employees
  • The nature of depression, anxiety and stress, as some of the most common experiences at play within the realm of mental ill health, how to recognise them, how they may affect people and what you can do to move through the difficulties they bring about
  • How to establish a culture of open communication in the workplace around mental health, in order to destigmatise people’s suffering and minimise the compounding factors of isolation, fear and ‘macho’ culture
  • How to approach talking to someone about experiencing a mental health concern
  • An array of lifestyle factors that you can work on or adapt to support your mental health, including diet and exercise, relational health and community
